AI Headshots vs Professional Corporate Headshots: Are AI Headshot Generators Worth It?

AI headshot tools are everywhere. Upload a few photos, press a button, and within minutes you have a polished “professional” portrait.

People are asking, can AI headshot generators replace a professional photographer?

The short answer is: they can be useful in some situations, but they are not the same thing as a real photographic portrait.

So, before writing this article, I tried an AI headshot tool myself.

I tested a platform called InstaHeadshots and the process was surprisingly fast. Here is what happened:

  • I downloaded the app to my phone

  • Uploaded 14 photos from my camera roll

  • Selected my preferred styles and “looks”, pressed a button, and…

…within seconds the system had generated 50 headshots.

I selected the six images that looked the most convincing and paid for them. The images were delivered via an email download link as high-resolution files. The entire process took less than 20 minutes. From a technology perspective, I was genuinely impressed by the speed and simplicity.

But then I looked more closely at the photographs.

The images were a good likeness… but my son pronounced them “plastic”

Closer inspection revealed some unusual details, for example:

  • My hairline didn’t match

  • My teeth had been cleaned and straightened, especially the bottom row (who needs Invisalign?)

  • My neck looked unusual in several images (shorter and longer with a fairly large throat - maybe that’s realistic?)

  • My body looked very “AI generated”

  • The clothes weren’t mine. The colours and shapes felt wrong (except the denim one) and I had funny earrings on, in some cases only one!

  • In some photos my face looked fuller than usual, or just out of proportion

  • My eyes had a few different shapes

While I could recognise myself, my son pronounced them “plastic”. The images definitely felt like a computer’s interpretation of me rather than an actual photograph.

More than anything, they didn’t feel like me.

An unexpected emotional response

This part surprised me. At first I was impressed, but once the initial “wow” factor faded, I found myself dismissing most of the images very quickly. Out of 50 photos, perhaps one might be usable. Even then, I’m not sure I would feel comfortable using it. Part of me doesn’t like the idea of putting a photograph online that was generated by AI rather than actually taken of me.

Interestingly, I realised I would be happier using something obviously unreal, like a cartoon illustration of myself, rather than a hyper-real AI portrait.

Authenticity matters more to me than I realised.

AI Headshots vs Professional Headshot (vs Selfie) - for those who know me, which image is most authentic?

Here is the fundamental difference.

AI Headshots

  • Generated from uploaded photos

  • Can look slightly artificial

  • Limited personality

  • Inconsistent across teams

  • No collaboration

  • AI tools generate images

Professional Headshots

  • Created during a 1-2-1 live session

  • Captures real character

  • Consistent lighting and style

  • Guided posing and feedback

  • You work with a photographer during a session designed to create professional corporate headshots that feel natural and authentic.

  • People arrive feeling nervous and leave with new confidence saying things like:

    • “That was actually fun.”

    • “You made this so easy.”

    • “I feel really good about myself.”

    • “I look better than I expected.”

When AI headshots can be useful

AI headshot generators are not always a bad idea.

They can make sense in certain situations:

  • Early-stage startups with very limited budgets

  • People who want to experiment with different visual styles

  • Companies with deliberately modern or stylised branding

For quick experiments or temporary profile photos, AI tools can be surprisingly capable.

But when authenticity matters, professional photography usually produces stronger results.

Why professional headshots still matter

For me, the real purpose of a professional headshot is simple.

It helps people feel confident showing up online.

That confidence changes how people present themselves.

And that is something no algorithm can replicate. If you want to see how this works in practice, you can explore my professional headshot photography in London and Canary Wharf.

Frequently asked questions about AI Headshots

What Is an AI Headshot Generator?

An AI headshot generator is a tool that creates portraits using artificial intelligence. Users upload several existing photos of themselves. The system then generates new portraits with different lighting, clothing, backgrounds, and styles. These tools are popular because they are fast, inexpensive and easy to use.

Are AI headshot generators worth it?

AI headshot generators can be useful for quick profile photos or early-stage startups. However, many users find the results look slightly artificial or inconsistent.

Do AI headshots actually look like you?

Sometimes they do, but small details often change. Facial structure, expressions, or hairlines may appear slightly different from the real person.

Are AI headshot apps safe?

Most AI tools require users to upload several personal photos. Privacy policies vary, so it is worth checking how your images may be stored or used before uploading them.

Why do companies still hire professional photographers?

Companies often want consistent team images, authentic portraits, and a positive experience for employees. Professional photography helps achieve all of these, particularly when creating corporate team headshots that match across an organisation.

What makes a good professional headshot?

A good headshot does more than show what someone looks like. It helps the person feel confident showing up online.
